Orinoco Delta
Covering an area of about 25.000 sq Km, the Orinoco’s deltas
is the second largest on the continent, after the Amazon
Delta. In its lover courser, the river reaches a width of 20
km and splits into about 40 major caños, which carry the
waters down into the Atlantic. Their Boca are distributed
along 360 km of coast. The southernmost channel, Rio Grande,
is the main one and is used by oceangoing vessels sailing
upriver to Ciudad Guayana
The climate of the Delta is hot and humid with an average
annual temperature of around 26 C that changes little
throughout the year. However temperature variation between day
and night can be considerable.
The Delta has long been one of Venezuela s wildest and the
best-preserved regions.
Porlamar and Tucupita are the major point of departure for

Full Day Orinoco Delta Adventure
In less than one hour flight from Porlamar you will arrive at
Capure airport at the edge of the Orinoco Delta on the
Atlantic Ocean, this is where the fresh, brownish Orinoco
waters collide with the sea.
At this exact location Christopher Columbus on his third
expedition to the new world decided that he discovered a new
continent and not an island from the tremendous
Amount
of fresh water pouring out from the river. Noticing the
extensive vegetation and giant mangrove trees lining the
shores, he said this must be paradise.
From there by fast boats we will venture deep into the delta
jungles and small rivers where the Warao Indians settled
hundreds of years ago to escape and hide from the cannibal
Carib Indians who made regular trips from the Caribbean
Islands to hunt the Warao, and eat them.
As we move deeper into this land of outstanding beauty you
will witness the change of flora from strictly giant mangrove
trees to a spectacular diversity of countless species of trees
and palms. The area is rich of tropical fauna, including blue
and yellow macaws, toucans, parrots, hawks, catfish, tarpon,
boa constrictors, tapirs, ocelots, cougars and jaguars.
We will visit the Indians and learn how they adapted to life
in this harsh environment. A ride in canoes in small rivers to
observe the wildlife and an unforgettable jungle walk with
expert guides will explain to you some of the many secrets of
this place. Those who like fishing have a chance for tarpon (
Sabalo) or catfish.
Lunch will be served in our Simoina Camp in the jungle. Indian
handicrafts are available for those who are interested.
