Designated as a national park in 1.962, this park covers an
area of 30.000 km2 and contains some of the oldest rocks on
the planet which have generated a dream landscape, unique in
the world. It is located in the Bolívar State, south of the
mighty Orinoco river and it is the largest in Venezuela and
the sixth in the world.
The eastern part of the park is called the Gran Sabana, an
endless beautiful high plateau with tropical rain forests and
savannas, many rivers and spectacular water falls. This region
is home to many Pemón indigenous peoples who live at the base
of the majestic tepuys. Walking, running, swimming, camping,
hiking, picture taking and wildlife viewing are possible in
this magnificent setting.
Our trip to Gran Sabana starts in Ciudad Bolivar or Puerto
Ordaz, both located on the shores of the Orinoco river. From
here we travel in small groups for several days traversing
about 600 km to the Brazilian border.
