National Park Archipiélago Los Roques

 

  In the Caribbean sea, at 176 Kms. to the north of Caracas is located the Archipielago of Los Roques, one of the largest marine national park of the Caribbean with exceptional landscapes of white sands, multicolor water, crystal. warm and immense environmental richness.

  The Archipielago Los Roques has an extension of 221.120 hectareas and is conformed by 300 islands, islets, keys and sand banks, beside countless coralline reefs, shaping a ring that borders the main lagoon of shallow waters, with mangroves and coralline formations.

  The creation of the Archipielago is due to the coralline growth on a submarine rocky plateau landing that started after the last glace. The Gran Roque island constitutes the only emerged part of this plateau and it is there where is settled the permanent population of the Archipielago Los Roques since 1910. The inhabitants of los Roques are dedicated to the artisan fishing of lobsters, snail and tropical water fishes. Moreover, they are starting to work on a public service activities and every time more with the growing tourism that begins to the area.
